Mine shaft tubbing refers to the structural lining used to support and stabilise the walls of a vertical mine shaft. Understanding how this system works is essential for ensuring safety, longevity, and reliability in deep mining operations—especially in areas with weak or water-bearing ground.
This type of shaft lining consists of prefabricated, interlocking segments—traditionally made from cast iron, though modern applications may use steel or reinforced concrete. These segments are installed in rings, forming a continuous lining that protects against collapse and water ingress.
Tubbing is typically installed during the shaft sinking phase—a method called “tubbing as you go”—or retrofitted into pre-sunk shafts. Each segment is bolted and sealed to the next, forming a rigid, pressure-resistant lining that ensures long-term safety and structural stability.
This system remains vital in both modern and historical mining, enabling safe operation of vertical shafts under challenging geological conditions.
The Woodsmith Mine project originally called for two deep shafts, but with one postponed, Woosung supplied lining segments for a single shaft. The project demanded exceptional precision—6,017 segments produced at a rate of 120 per week—each manufactured to a 2mm tolerance and ±0.1mm machined face accuracy. Meeting tight specifications while navigating strict delivery timelines and international logistics required close collaboration with Anglo American. A dedicated mining supervisor was based at Woosung’s facility to ensure every segment met the project’s exacting standards before shipment.
At Woosung Tubbing, precision manufacturing, exceptional quality, and engineering excellence are at the core of what we do. Our ability to consistently exceed expectations—both in production and logistics—has earned us a trusted reputation in global mining and infrastructure sectors.
As future-facing projects demand ever higher standards, Woosung continues to raise the bar, delivering solutions that combine structural integrity, long-term durability, and top-tier performance.
